ORU's MBA Ranks with Nation's Best
By Jadell Forman
ORU's MBA students rank near the top in the nation, according to a recent field test, providing evidence that ORU's program is among the best.
This year, for the first time, ORU's MBA students took an exit exam called the Major Field Test designed by Educational Testing Services to measure how well students learned the information generally required, needed, and expected of graduating MBA students. ORU's students scored in the upper 10 percent on this nationally normed exam.
Dr. Mark Lewandowski, dean of the ORU School of Business, announced the results in a recent chapel: "[T]he first time we took the test, we ranked in the 90th percentile, [putting] our graduate school in the top 10 percent of all graduate schools in the [nation that participated in the exam]. And we had three students that ranked in the 95th percentile," which put them in the highest possible ranking for the 3,530 examinees. The test compares ORU's results to those of other schools that took the test, schools such as Clemson University, the University of Nebraska, Oklahoma State University, the University of Tulsa, San Jose State University, California State University at Fullerton, and Xavier University.
According to graduate business chair Dr. Marshal Wright, "Although ORU scored above 80 percent in all areas, we [earned] the strongest scores in accounting, finance, and strategic integration." He says the traditional MBA program emphasizes the quantitative aspects of business -- that is, the measurable "hard side" of business versus the "soft side" of leadership and human relations. "While we do deal effectively with the soft side of business, the strength of our MBA is that we've also maintained the integrity of the quantitative components and the strength of our comprehensive, integrated strategic management capstone experience.
"As a chair, I'm constantly trying to increase the value of the degree." A perk not just for this year's business graduates, but for all alumni. "The value of an alum's degree is not fixed as of the date of their graduation." Wright says this distinguished ranking increases the degree's reputation and value in the marketplace.
Wright believes ORU's high scores result from the quality of program, faculty emphasis on excellence, mission of organization, "and the way our students, faculty, and staff are purpose-driven," believing they are part of something bigger than themselves.
Lewandowski says business graduates can be ministers in the marketplace. "Second Corinthians 2:14 says, we are the fragrance of Christ in all parts of business and arts and sciences. Not just theology and not just ministries -- that's important. But in business we believe that we're an outreach also."
The ORU Residential MBA program, while providing the most widely recognized master's degree in business, allows students to customize their degree with a concentration in the areas of accounting, finance, international business, management, marketing, or non-profit management. Each evening course, taught by world-class faculty members, allows students to maintain a full-time professional position.
